’a weekend with Monsieur Magritte’ was compiled from fragments of amateur films Magritte made himself on super-8 and 8mm. The first part – ’Saturday’ – drew from the films he shot in the 1956 -1960 period together with his friends from Brussels and from the recordings of his own works. The second part – ’Sunday’ – consists of fragments from ‘biographical’ films and holiday shots. The images, chronologically arranged, present us with an image of Magritte’s (lower) middle class social circle and surroundings, and of the way in which he himself observes them, often lucidly and remorselessly.
