In ’Les artistes’, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and painter Antoine Wiertz make an appearance by means of a historical performance. Video clips of historical documents and catalogues are interspersed with recordings of contemporary artists, like Jan Fabre. In this way, Vergara creates a historically layered perspective on ’the Belgian artist’. He relates the efforts of artists in this country to the existence of a nation. By allowing his brush to move across the cinematic images, the artist is also suggesting that virtual reality embodies the pallet with which he is ’painting’.
