Zapatero

Black and white images illustrate José Luis Zapatero’s term of office. He became prime minister of Spain in 2004 and was still in power when Vergara was filming. Images of for instance a homosexual couple during a wedding ceremony are shown – with a new act, Zapatero’s government made this kind of marriage possible. With his brush, Vergara traces the cinematic images, while his painting hand is in between the images and a glass screen. Sometimes the brush moves across the glass, leaving paint sweeps behind. Vergara is suggesting that he collects his paint from either the cinematic images or an already digitized reality, eventually leaving it behind on the filmed glass.
