Vogelaar, author and anthologist of the essay-collection ‘Kunst als kritiek: Voorbeelden van een materialistiese kunstopvatting’ (‘Art as Criticism: Instances of a Materialistic Artistic View’), which puts forward a rather sceptical image of the critical function of art. Shouldn’t art focus more on expressing contradictions, rather than representing reality? Shouldn’t the artist become aware of his position and the way his work and the medium relates to the industry and the public, in order to be able to explore other relationships, mediums and audiences?
