Peter Struycken, one of the first European artists to make use of the computer, compares Composition in Black and White, the first abstract painting by Piet Mondriaan, to a computer programme-simulated copy – ‘Computer Composition With Lines’ by Michael Noll, who was a scientific advisor for the White House at the time. Struycken concludes that the visual language Mondriaan uses is totally unique, in spite of its apparent simplicity, and it cannot be imitated by logistic composition schemes. Part of the BRT (Belgian radio and television broadcast network) television series ’Zoeklicht’ (’Searchlight’).
