LA FORCE DES CHOSES

The film is a portrait of the father of the artist, who lived off a private income provided by a familial commercial empire—for which he simply had to thank his birth. Mulliez has tried to render visible the exterior forces that influenced this man. There’s of course the issue of money, but there’s also the matter of an interiorized user’s manual that comes with capital. Behind this happiness of the multiplication of the loaves hides a helplessness with regard to the sum received without having to do any effort.

In the film we see the longing of a man who knows all about the organic character of his garden, but who has withdrawn in himself, and who, in search of meaning, will find a soporific for his insomnia in Christian charity. In this process he reactivates a colonial subconscious, which time and again takes him back to the innate superiority of a minority that rules human territories already conquered.
