This photograph makes me smile because it brings to my mind the memories of summer moments spent with the beloved ones, especially of the joyful river swims and playing in water.
But it also makes me sad and angry because it evokes the many shocking images I saw last August depicting the environmental disaster involving mass fish die-off due to water intoxication that hit the Odra river (PL) which is passing through the city where I grew up.
Rachel Carson whose seminal book Silent spring (1962) I was reading around that time pictures the effects of use of pesticides on living organisms. I have to think about it too while looking at this image. Carson writes: In an age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind even to his most essential needs for survival, water along with other resources has become the victim of his indifference.
