ZOLANG ER SCHEEPSBOUWERS ZINGEN

The decline of the shipbuilding industry induced director Vromman to tell the story of the Boelwerf, Belgium’s last active shipyard. At the same time, this particular story runs parallel to a part of the general social-economic history: it tells the tale of belief in unlimited expansion turned into uncertainty and social uprising. To the clear understanding of the matter, a report kind of documentary wouldn’t have been sufficient, so the result is a 4-hour epic, a saga in three volumes. Jan Vromman claims his motives to be particularly emotional and thus stresses a strictly personal view on the fiery matter. In the documentary itself, this personal angle is emphasised by excerpts of a video diary in which Vromman gives account of the production process of this monumental documentary.
