IN SEARCH OF WHITE

Ria Pacquée takes the camera for a stroll around the three very different environments of city, mountain and sea. Cataloguing the white objects and images found, these three chapters isolate symbols and colourlessness, exploring absence and negativity in three different contexts. Each image evokes a range of associations and responses, whether emotional or intellectual. The items can be static or dynamic, like the mist that half-conceals everything else in the ’Mountain’ chapter. The images speak eloquently of the intended and the accidental, the cherished and the abandoned, the creative and the destructive. Removed from their contexts, numbers, languages and other symbols become simply shapes with only a visual, decorative function. Across the three chapters, the similarities and differences are not what might be expected. Does the colour change the significance of the setting, or does the setting change the significance of the colour?
