L'ESPRIT BELGE

In ’L’esprit belge’, politicians, journalists and artists make an appearance. In a montage of historical images, including a number of drawings and paintings, Angel Vergara sketches a subjective historical frame in which Belgium is being discussed. By letting his brush move across the cinematic images, the artist is also suggesting that recorded reality embodies the pallet with which he is ’painting’. Within this framework he is also examining the social battle that was waged. In Brussels Central Station, Karl Marx meets the Minister of Culture Fadila Laanan, and the artist, dressed up as Jan Hoet, walks around Brussels-South station while talking about impulses artists could possibly give to the city. (see also Arterim from 2003).
