FILMs D’ÉTUDE série blanche (barres, bâtons, objets + effets spéciaux)

video | col.
sound

In a way this is a series of first ‘white’ reactions to the reality filmed. Images heightened by special effects decided upon during the editing or ‘by motif’ with the help of objects held in the hand facing the camera: American straw, branch of a Luxembourg tree, Belgian or German beer pack found on the spot.Moments filmed in a park, in a city, beside water, around a sculpture, in the street, in a museum room... Live observations, with the help of a primary colour (white), basic objects (bars, rods, bits of paper, beer- and other cards, and elementary actions (filming, shot, exposure).

Films aux Blancs

video

A compilation of filmed moments, taken from VOLUMES DE RÉALITÉ (1) and FILMs D’ÉTUDE.Blocks of reality cut with white blanks: (2) the volume takes shape, in a sweep of space organized as tracking shots alternating with still shots. The space is organized as a field of vision made up of moments when there are no images to form the film "with white blanks": the image seems to become detached from the sound, the screen is lit up with white (2), in the lit room the sound persists.
(1) VOLUMES DE RÉALITÉ: “everything takes place on the spot, live with the shot. The always synchronous sounds decide on the action; the camera pivots or fixes its subject: somebody, pigeon or person, crosses the image, winding up its length” (j.t. lexicon 2005).
(2) White blank, a procedure which takes place during editing, precedes even more and interferes. Images and sounds are released in the projected white blank.

ÉTUDES CORÉENNES, film à effets spéciaux

video | col.
sound

Filmed data of a journey in South Korea as far as the border with North Korea; a set of space scenes (1) heightened by special effects. (2)Square white line, red rectangle-frame, blue curve, pink angle, black mobile-point... The effect precedes the action, follows a movement, takes a speed, a colour, from one or other of the elements making up the scene... The effect lends tone, the image is activated. As the journey proceeds, random scenes are organized like so many dance sets, short or long, lasting from a minute to several minutes.(1) Space scene: “a filmed volume of reality giving rise, by way of the choice of framing, the distance to the subjects filmed and the scale of a central clearance of terrain, to the illusion of witnessing the direction of an enacted moment of reality... An impression further bolstered by the presence of signs like crosses, dots, frames. Reality is organized in an extraordinary choreography of the unforeseeable” (j.t. lexicon 2005).(2) Special effects: “the special effect moves the image; at the moment when it is taken (bars, rods, straw...) to the moment of editing (circles, lines, crosses...). It sets the tone, measure and thinking of the person who is filming and looking, at times predictable, at others all of a sudden in the image, between the self looking on and the subject filmed. It acts on the image, to express or contradict its length, its own space. It shows: a distance, the distance which always separates us from the image and the subject filmed” (j.t. lexicon 2005).

Stereoscopic equipment designed to be listened to, “pre-recorded and at a different time”, preferably opposite an open or closed window. A Franco-German dialogue stretched out over a week in seven periods, between a character (the Visitor) and a voice (the Voice).
“Images with an acoustic form, as a quantity of infinite events, so long-drawn-out that they end up in a fluidity that is not purely descriptive because it is made up of everything that happens. The stages of space, from close up to far away, from the serious to the insignificant, take shape in a strange `four-dimensional’ perspective. (…) Each instant seems like a corridor of reflection, listening, astonishment, distraction, surprise. (...) Unfettered, the real slides over a level, the layers of space and time are blurred on one and the same horizon with no breaks. Is it by reaching this kind of level that one finally manages to no longer avoid being there? The present, nothing but the present, without anything encroaching on itself. (...) full moments, welded in layers of disconcerting accolades: double glazing and a urinal and a postcard panorama, 17th, 18th and the railway line and Hamburg, and smoke and flags. Everything is there without invention, pure truthfulness of a disquieting present moment. Forms of transport pass, the sun, too, and the days as well, a general procession, marchpast of the congested humdrum. Is this what reality really is? There are things even more abyssal, the engulfment of the street in the place, trucks, vans and cars, construction site noises: cranes, boat horns, the sky, time, the velvety coating of rain, means of locomotion.”
