JAYCE SALLOUM - UNTITLED: THE VIDEO INSTALLATION AS AN ACTIVE ARCHIVE

Jayce Salloum’s untitled is an ongoing multi-channel video installation addressing social and political realities and representations, manifestations and enunciations. The work focusses on borders/nationalisms/ movements (shifts, transitions, and interstitial space/time), subjectivity and the conditions of living between polarities of culture, geography, history and ideology. The installation is not modelled on the viewing of art (i.e. painting) but on an approach to research or reading, a living archive. Flexible in its presentation, the work aims to create an atmosphere of visual collision, collaboration, contextualisation, critical interference or mutual existence. In his lecture untitled: the video installation as an active archive, Salloum reflects on issues raised in the work – examples include the dialectical relationship between the speaker and the spoken, powers that can force people to move and the types of freedom that allow people to stay – illustrated with fragments of the ongoing piece.
