THE ETHNOGRAPHIC TURN (REVISITED): LONNIE VAN BRUMMELEN & SIEBREN DE HAAN

LECTURE - SCREENING

Belgian Premiere screening of 'Episode of the Sea' plus talk with the artists.

'Episode of the Sea' is the outcome of a 2-year collaboration with the fishing community of the former island of Urk. In the previous century, the Dutch dammed off and drained their inland sea to create new farmland. The island of Urk, situated in the middle of the sea, suddenly found itself embraced by reclaimed land. But its fishermen managed to continue their trade. They found new fishing grounds, far out in the North Sea.

Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan produce film installations, texts, sculptures and collages that explore cultural and geopolitical landscapes such as Europe’s borders sites of resource production and global trade and the (non) sites of cultural heritage.

'The Ethnographic Turn (Revisited)' is series of lectures that explore the relationship between contemporary art and cultural diversity in an urban context, with a specific focus on practice-based-research. The lecture series will discuss how art has become a space “for tracking, representing, and performing the effects of difference in contemporary life”. What does it imply to create art in an age of so-called ‘superdiversity’? At the same time the lectures will explore how art can create a different ‘language’ and ‘imagery’ to problematize cultural difference and urban frictions and to bring possible alternative representational practices into bear. This discussion will be embedded in the ‘ethnographic turn’ in contemporary art.
