NIELS VAN TOMME: THE NEW GENERAL DIRECTOR OF ARGOS

As of 1 December 2018, Argos will be welcoming Niels Van Tomme as its new general director.

Niels Van Tomme has an impressive track record: it includes exhibitions, professorships, publications and events. After finishing his studies (at RITSC Brussels and KU Leuven), he quickly went on to become director of arts and media at Provisions Library (Washington, DC), followed by an appointment as curator at the Center For Art, Design and Visual Culture (Baltimore). He has taught at several Belgian and Dutch arts institutes and at universities in the US, where he aimed to investigate new artistic and cultural models for designing and analysing a just and inclusive society.

In 2016, Van Tomme became the director of De Appel (Amsterdam). This institution essentially aims to open up contemporary visual arts, organises an internationally renowned curator training, and hosts an historically important archive and library. In the past two years, Van Tomme has worked passionately to lead this more than forty-year-old institute towards a new dawn. De Appel has much in common with Argos. Both centres work on a comparable scale and have similar missions, targeting an open, critical and inclusive dialogue. Anchored locally but with a global outlook, Argos operates on a diverse scale, organising exhibitions, conferences, events, publications and educational programmes.

The board of directors and the staff at Argos are looking forward to welcoming Niels Van Tomme. We are confident and motivated to work with him. In a short statement, Van Tomme says:

 “I am very happy to bring my international network and my recent experiences in Amsterdam to the challenging context of Argos and the city of Brussels. I believe that this unique arts institute, with its special history, is able to promote an open and diverse metropolitan context, to offer space for experimentation, reflection and change, both artistically and socially.”

Niels Van Tomme follows in the footsteps of Rolf Quaghebeur, who led the organisation from the heart, with a lot of talent and a strong commitment. While preserving Argos’ raison d’être, he accompanied us on new explorations and in new fields of work. His tenure was characterised by a solid team spirit and an unconditional loyalty to the organisation and its mission. Together with the staff he ensured Argos’ continuity, growth and development towards its essence. We are eternally grateful to him, and we will cherish the bond of friendship that grew throughout the years. Rolf is embarking on a new challenge, closer to his family. May his future at Kaap (Bruges – Ostend) be just as fruitful and his enthusiasm just as strong.

Niels Van Tomme a un parcours impressionnant : expositions, missions d'enseignement, publications et événements. Citoyen du monde, immédiatement après ses études (RITCS et KU Leuven), il a débuté comme directeur des arts et des médias à PROVISIONS LIBRARY (Washington, DC), puis a été nommé commissaire au CENTRE FOR ART, DESIGN AND VISUAL CULTURE (Baltimore). Il a enseigné dans des instituts d'art belges et néerlandais mais également dans des universités aux États-Unis où il s'est concentré sur la recherche de nouveaux modèles pour l'art et la culture afin de façonner et de s’interroger sur une société juste et inclusive.

Depuis 2016, il était le directeur de DE APPEL (Amsterdam), une institution dédiée essentiellement aux arts visuels contemporains, qui conçoit un programme de conservation de renommée internationale et gère des archives ainsi qu’une bibliothèque historique. Au cours des deux dernières années, Van Tomme a redonné à cet institut existant depuis plus de quarante ans une énergie sans précédent. DE APPEL possède de nombreux points en commun avec ARGOS (entre autre une échelle et une mission similaires). Cet institut se concentre sur un dialogue ouvert, critique et fédérateur. Son ancrage est aussi bien local qu’international et son fonctionnement est très diversifié : expositions, colloques, événements, publications et programmes éducatifs.

Le conseil d’administration d’ARGOS et ses futurs collègues souhaitent la bienvenue à Niels Van Tomme en qui nous accordons tous notre confiance. Dans une brève déclaration, Van Tomme affirme:

"Je suis ravi d’apporter mon réseau international et mes expériences récentes d’Amsterdam dans le contexte stimulant d’ARGOS et de la ville de Bruxelles. Je crois que cet institut d'art unique, avec son histoire particulière, peut représenter dans le contexte métropolitain un lieu ouvert et diversifié, offrant beaucoup d'espace d'expérimentation, de réflexion et de changement, à la fois sur le plan artistique et sur le plan social. "

Niels Van Tomme succède à Rolf Quaghebeur. Monsieur Quaghebeur a dirigé l’organisation avec enthousiasme, grand talent et dévouement. Il a préservé l'existence d'ARGOSet nous a amené vers de nouveaux projets et territoires. L’encouragement de l’esprit d’équipe ainsi que sa fidélité inconditionnelle à l’organisation et à sa mission constituent ses mérites majeurs. Il a assuré avec tous les autres employés la continuité mais aussi le développement essentiel de l’organisation et de ses activités. Nous lui en sommes très reconnaissants et souhaitons continuer à entretenir l'amitié qui nous lie. Plus proche de sa famille, il a relevé un nouveau défi : nous lui souhaitons à KAAP (Bruges-Ostende) un avenir tout aussi réussi avec le même enthousiasme dans la réalisation de ses projets.

NIELS VAN TOMME: DE NIEUWE ALGEMEEN DIRECTEUR VAN ARGOS

Niels Van Tomme brengt een indrukwekkend palmares met zich mee: tentoonstellingen, leeropdrachten, publicaties en evenementen. Hij is een wereldburger die reeds onmiddellijk na zijn studies (RITSC en KU-Leuven) aan de slag ging als directeur kunst en media bij Provisions Library (Washington, DC), gevolgd door een benoeming als curator bij het Center For Art, Design and Visual Culture (Baltimore). Hij doceerde aan Belgische en Nederlandse kunstinstituten en aan universiteiten in de Verenigde Staten waar hij het onderzoek tot doel stelde naar nieuwe modellen voor kunst en cultuur in het vormgeven en bevragen van een rechtvaardige en inclusieve maatschappij.

Hij was sinds 2016 de gedreven directeur van De Appel (Amsterdam), een instelling die in essentie hedendaagse beeldende kunst ontsluit, een internationaal gerenommeerde opleiding voor curatoren vormgeeft, en een historisch belangrijk archief en bibliotheek openstelt. In de afgelopen twee jaren heeft Van Tomme met een ongekende energie dit meer dan veertig jaar oude instituut opnieuw begeesterd. De Appel heeft heel wat gemeen met Argos. Werkend op gelijkaardige schaal en met een vergelijkbare missie richt het zich op een open, kritische en verbindende dialoog. Lokaal verankerd, doch met een wijde internationale horizon, heeft het een zeer diverse werking met tentoonstellingen, symposia, events, publicaties en educatieve programma’s.   

Argos heet Niels Van Tomme van harte welkom in haar midden en dit geldt al evenzeer voor de collega’s waarmee hij morgen zal mogen samenwerken, als voor het bestuur. We hebben er allen veel vertrouwen en zin in. In een kort statement stelt Van Tomme:

“Ik kijk er erg naar uit om mijn internationale netwerk en recente ervaringen in Amsterdam naar de uitdagende context van Argos en de stad Brussel te brengen. Ik geloof dat dit unieke kunstinstituut met haar bijzondere geschiedenis een open en diverse grootstedelijke context kan voorstaan, met veel ruimte voor experiment, reflectie en verandering, zowel op artistiek als maatschappelijk niveau.”

Niels Van Tomme volgt Rolf Quaghebeur op in deze functie. Quaghebeur leidde de organisatie met het hart en met groot talent en engagement. Hij bewaarde de essentiële bestaansgronden van Argos en bracht ons naar nieuwe verkenningen en werkvelden. Als grote verdiensten moeten zeker de versterking van de teamgeest genoemd worden en zijn steeds onvoorwaardelijke loyauteit aan de organisatie en haar missie. Hij verzekerde, samen met alle andere medewerkers, de continuïteit, maar ook de groei en de verdieping van Argos op weg naar de essentie. We zijn hem daarvoor veel dank verschuldigd en we willen de aldus gegroeide vriendschapsband steeds blijven koesteren. Hij ging een nieuwe uitdaging aan, dichter bij zijn gezin. We wensen hem bij Kaap (Brugge – Oostende) een even succesvolle toekomst toe en een blijvende geestdrift in zijn plannen.
